When I go out in cold weather, I generally just dress warmly so I don't need a heater so the primary use for this for me would be in an emergency situation. It strikes me as much more reliable than the plastic hand warmers and the fuel could also be used to prime a fire in an emergency situation. I didn't realize that there is no official way to turn it on and off. Once the fuel starts burning, it burns for the duration of how much fuel is in there according to the instructions. Which wouldn't be a problem that much in a long-term, skiing/hunting, emergency type situation. However I did some mental gymnastics about heat and oxygen and long story short, I put this (in the little felt container it comes with) in a Ziploc bag for about two minutes and that was enough time to starve the catalytic converter and the unit shut off.

Helpful review: Love this cup. I was originally turned off to it due to the size of the top section, however, it's not as big as it looks online and it's a perfect size. It will fit most purses but not likely women's pant pockets. After filling it with water I shook the cup and there was no leaking. Even after I finished my latte and collapsed the cup there was no residue leakage at all. The cup didn't get excessively hot either. The cup also had mL markers on the inside which is wonderful. This is very similar to the Hydaway cup (which I absolutely love) but for coffee. I highly recommend this product!

Helpful review: At almost 60 years old I got cracked fingers for the first time ever- first one thumb, and about four weeks later the other.
